April is oral cancer awareness month, a great time to make sure you’re up-to-date on your dental exams!
Some statistics from the ADA: Oral and Oropharyngeal Cancers account for 2.9% of all cancers diagnosed in the US and 1.6% of all cancer deaths. The 5-year relative survival rate for those with localized disease at diagnosis is 83%, compared with only 36% in patients whose cancer has metastasized. This is why it is crucial to keep up with regular dental exams… early detection is key!
Major risk factors for oral and oropharyngeal cancers include tobacco use, alcohol consumption, human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, & chewing betel quid (“paan”, often practiced in Asian communities).
Avoiding oral cancer risk factors and early detection can help to save your life!
